Unpredictablility

Another person has died at my former Unit in Tekong, BMT. This time, it was not a newbie recruit or anything, this time it was an instructor who passed away, a sergeant! He was doing some casual running back to the more forested areas of the island and on his way back, just entering into camp, he collapsed. Subsequent helevac *Helicopter evacuation* to a mainland hospital was to no avail. He was declared dead minutes later. Cause of Death? Heat Attack. He was 19 years old. BMT has since baned running out of camp, a decision which i think has no rationale for, this could not have been prevented even if he ran in camp. Camp being the premises in and immediately surrounding BMT buildings.

Why is this incident so close to my heart? Its cos I've done many runs out of camp, off into the more secluded areas of tekong island. Many times alone and other times with my running buddy in our training for the Singapore Marathon. We did 16- 20 km runs together, Albert and me, sometimes spanning the whole length of tekong island. Nothing happened to us, yet an innocent life was taken away for another. Spontaneous deaths... unpreventable, unpredictable and altogether sad.

We should be thankful for everyday we live, for you never know whats gonna happen tomorrow. Take care guys.
